Happy Friday Families,
I hope you’ve had an amazing week! Please keep reading for important 2nd grade and Westlake updates.
2nd Grade Updates
B Street Theater Field Trip - The trip to see Charlotte’s Web was a huge success. It was so amazing to see a book we’ve been reading in class truly come to life and I know the students had so much fun! Also, a BIG thank you to all of our chaperones for volunteering their time and come with us to the show!
Lastly, the second grade team would like to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience of the buses arriving to the theater late and thus departing late, which resulted in an abbreviated lunch-time and delayed dismissal time. We recognize the frustrations this may have caused. We greatly appreciate your flexibility and feedback. The second grade team has taken your concerns into consideration as we plan our field lessons for next year and reevaluate the days and times in which they take place.
Nightly Reading - Please remember to have your child read for at least 20 minutes each night. As we look forward to 3rd grade, it’s important that students are continuing to practice at home and build their reading stamina.
Westlake Updates
Recess - All recess equipment is provided for students during recess. In order to keep items from being lost or stolen please keep all balls and equipment home.
Call for Coaches - This spring, we’re launching FUTSAL in our athletics program! Futsal is similar to indoor soccer; games will be played in our gym. We’re looking for adult and high school futsal coaches; please spread the word to help us recruit futsal coaches as well as kickball supporters. Click HERE for more information and to sign up! Email [email protected] with questions.
Book Fair - Scholastic Book Fair opens Thursday, April 4th and will end Thursday, April 11th. To check out the schedule book fair click HERE.
Thank you for reading and have a wonderful weekend!

Most of the research and speech preparation will be done in class, but I ask that you begin to brainstorm and discuss with your student someone they would be interested in researching for this project. I do ask that no student choose Martin Luther King Jr., as that is who I will be using as an example during each stage of this project. Difference Makers Project - Your student will be participating in an upcoming culminating project in which they spend time researching and learning about a person from history or present day who has made a large impact in the United States or around the world! This project will end with a Living Wax Museum event on Wednesday, February 6, during which each 2nd grader will dress up as their "Difference Maker" and give a speech about them to families and peers.
Most of the research and speech preparation will be done in class, but I ask that you begin to brainstorm and discuss with your student someone they would be interested in researching for this project. I do ask that no student choose Martin Luther King Jr., as that is who I will be using as an example during each stage of this project. Please click hereto sign up your child for their "Difference Maker" by Monday, December 17. Thank you for your support!

Family Past & Present Project - In 2nd grade, your student is learning about families long ago and today. This unit involves a culminating project where the students are asked to create and decorate a family, collect 1-2 family artifacts/heirlooms (photograph, document, interview, object, etc.) and complete a speech to present to the class on his/her family history. This project is DUE Monday, October 8th (the day we return from Fall Break). I highly recommend your child start this project over the weekend and work on it next week so you can enjoy other activities over the break! The directions and speech outline will be sent home with your child today. I already talked to the class about the project today. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Headphones - If you haven't done so already, please send your student to school with a labeled zip-lock bag with a pair of headphones they can keep at school for the rest of the year. If you need assistance purchasing headphones, please reach out to me!

Today, your student will be bringing home a pink permission slip for our first field trip of the year - A Farm Tour at Cal Expo. The field trip is on October 17 from 9:00 - 1:00pm. Each class needs five chaperones for the trip, so if you are interested and have been fingerprinted, please indicate that on the permission slip. Please be sure to return your student’s completed permission slip to school by Friday, September 28!
Also, please remember to have your student read at least 15-30 minutes daily - this really helps build their reading skills and helps create a lifelong love of reading!
